I Lay My Cheek

I lay my cheek against your cheek so warm
And feel pour through the life inside of you.
I press, how tenderly, my wrist upon your arm,
And know my pulse is beating time more true.
I meet my lips on lips that are not mine
And for two seconds all the world is won—
The high risks ventured, the great things done,
And I’m on earth with heaven you divine.
You look into my eyes as I look you,
We breathe together, know, and take in whole,
Who each are each, as one heat-tracing soul
That claims last vict’ry of the utmost true.
I press my cheek into your cheek so warm
And treasure timelessly my wrist upon your arm.
