If I Could Make…

If I could make your heart to seek my own,
Then I would print three words within your mind;
Your inner eye would see them, they’d be known,
And you on me would cease this seeming blind.
“I love you”—these are they the mighty three
That in themselves fill pages filling books
That readers round the world have joy to see,
Take comfort from their hour-loving looks
And clasp the hands of who their lovers be.
“I love you”–Now I print them on you lips,
Your chin, your cheek, your ears, your fingertips!
“I love you,” says my mouth upon your heart,—
It beats more fast! Now self-denial slips,
Till clasped we are as one, to never part!
