Oh, Sonnets!

If I could put a smile upon your face
For anything that I might say or do,
If any tripped-down speech or song might chase
Big laugh, or “Hee!” right up through you;
If one small wink would blink you into cheer,
Wholly unexpected, sudden, real,
To half our distance, bringing us more near,
Then I would try, buy, it, it! Deal
The cards, my dear, and let’s play Eighty-one!
The moon is climbing back behind the sun;
The stars turn green, the birds all crazy talk;
The dogs are laughing, won’t take us for a walk!
And if you think a sonnet is a bore,
Just walk your head as I turn out the door!
