O Happy Students

VanDamme Academy has taught her students well,
So well, so thorough good, so deep and fine,
They take up every Cyranoed sweet line,
Divide and conquer motive, meaning, soul,
Relate each witted part to lyric whole,
The whole who is that hero we admire,
Who tosses speaking love-flames mind to mind,
Translates our common cloth to vests of fire,
Inviting we to be true heroes, too—
That’s her, that’s him, that’s me, that’s you, and you!
And yet, let’s not forget the maker of this man,
Whose work has willed his wonder on our eyes,
Whose life has breathed himself—the great Rostand!—
Through gasping students climbing to the skies!
