The Self-Owned Soul

Oh, what, you say, is someone’s self-owned soul?
It’s every mental part of who they are.
Their thoughts and feelings, dreams, fill up that whole
Which is a self as single as a star,
A shining glory beamed through night and day
Where beauty is each act, each word they say.
The self-owned soul is ownership complete;
It does not rent or lease itself to men,
Nor does it fake a win for some defeat,
Nor hide its pride when it has won again.
No, not a spirit in a distant sphere
Shut off from body, mind and will,
But all the passion of the life right here
Whose wants and loves and joys are never still.
