Happy Worth-Day to Nehemiah Leftwich

Oh, Nehemiah Leftwich is a civilized man;
Fine music, fair flowers, old stonework, clear views,
Rich coffee smooth-poured like some happy good news
(All these wonders he shows us whenever he can—
His loves of a lifetime, delights of a day)
Are steady and sure, and keep coming our way
Like springs ever-bubbling and babbling along
That are youth, truth and joy of his ever-young song,
A song made of penthouse pianos up high
That toss with sheer loving their notes through the sky,
And we catch, and they lift us, we see, hear and wing
With spirit-light praise for a civilized thing!
Today’s not his birthday? Oh, maybe it is!
High cultivated worth-day—it always is his!
