To Have Just This

To have just this—a little taste
Of gentle rise through open space,
A flash of joy untinged with gloom,
A swinging step around still doom,
A breath of deathless, dewy air,
A lifting flight to everywhere
That waves its wings within the mind
And flutters open eyes un-blind—
A sense of “up” in spirit won,
A surge of blood in flesh re-born,
A long, long, long in-draw of sky
And sun and mountain, all things high!
To have just this, to feel its fire,
It is the gift of life’s desire!
