I Affirm

A human mind affirmer I will be,
In human praise of human industry,
In human love of independent height,
Which he has gained who sheds with joy his light;
In human worship of that man of thought
Who seeks and reaches, finds what he has sought;
In human “Bravo!” and ecstatic stand
In seeing where he triumphs, sea or land,
Or somewhere far beyond, by faint new star,
Or deep within a glass, where wee things are.
In human love of true creative aim
I’ll raise my eyes to that artistic flame
Which fashions beauty’s soul by his own sight
And strikes my eyes with makings of his might.
Apart and independent, solo, one,
The single individual has begun,
And strides right on as hero proud and strong
To lift and draw the human race along.
