So steady now, the notes advance,
Those solid notes so deep and strong.
I hear no fragile skip and dance,
But thought that goeth straight along.
A pause, and silence lifts a dream;
A chord, and follows hard the soul;
A run, as by a wayward stream,
Then steady steps take back control.
The orchestra now feathers light
Around the solemn height of strength;
The firmer mind grows full with might
And sees the future sail out length.
Those solid notes, so deep and strong,
Within themselves know all that’s true,
And all that I am in my song
Through all my life I shall renew.
