What For

You said you are the one who wants me full, entire;
And I said I want only your desire.
You vowed you’re she who seeks to see my inner mind;
And I vowed I would have you were I blind.
You put me on a pedestal to dream me pure;
I pulled you to the dust to make you sure.
You thought me flame unseen, with splendid, fiery glow;
I bit your arm and sucked, till blood did show.
You heard me coarsely speak, and swore it spiritual;
I heard you singing soft, and that was all.
Now have you changed and grappled me like hate,
And I can laugh aloud, a man who makes his fate!
Ah, you have sea become, and I the shore,
And we to each do echo—and we know what for!
