What Is Breath?

I went from you, returned, and went again,
But in my mind I stayed, to hold you tight.
Then dawn so falsely lightened through my dream
I saw you not as you, but vision bright.
I placed you on a pedestal of fire
To make you one with my unspoke desire.
When next I saw you in the rainy day
It seemed my dream was wash-ed quite away.
Your hair was all awry, your face was sad,
And sudden I resolved to chance you mad.
Tremblingly my secret love I told,
Tremblingly I waited, hot and cold;
Tremblingly I saw your soft lips part,
Then suddenly I grasped you to my heart!
Oh, it’s so hard to breathe when love is new,
But what is breath when to the real you’re true?
