I Saw You

I saw you in the dawning
When night’s breath lay down still.
The sky was smiling faintly;
It had not yet a will.
In deepest shadow standing
Your face was like a flame.
I knew a sun was rising,
But did not know its name.
You walked out to a clearing
So tall and straight and proud.
Inside, my heart went clanging,
Unheard, and yet so loud.
You looked at me with sureness,
Your lips began to gleam,
And all my days were risen
Upon your sunlight stream.
Ten years ago this happened,
Ten years ago this May,
With all the nights gone will-less
Into the light of day.
