This is Best

My life is mine, is only mine,
From start to finish, single, true.
I do not stop, do not resign,
The thoughts I think and things I do.
The poems I’ve written, said and sung,
Are my great wealth and keep me young,
And when the page of age shall turn
Still younger songs I’ll seek to learn.
Though then my voice may soar not strong,
I shall rejoice the hills among.
Among the hills and open sky
I’ll thrill myself to gladly lie,
Nor wonder where my soul does pass
When I’m right here, upon the grass.
Upon the grass, beneath the sun,
I’ll judge my work and wink, “Well done.”
Some others, they may yearn for things
Bound up in their imaginings,
Dismiss the real, the facts that are,
And wish themselves upon a star.
But this is best, of life is first:
To drink one’s years with lasting thirst.
