After Much Silence

“Speak!” said the sparrow,
“Speak!”
But I’d no words to say.

“Weak!” said the sparrow,
“Weak!”
And so I was that day.

He hopped the bough,
Lit up the tree,
But still no speaking came to me.

“Speak! Speak! Speak!”
He told the sky.
But the sky was silent

And said not a word.
“Weak! Weak! Weak!”
Declaimed the bird.

Strong is the sparrow,
Strong;
He speaks his whole life long,

And when I’ve words to say,
“Speak! Speak! Speak!”
May I light up the day.
