If stars could sing like birds do sing
And throw down songs all night,
If clouds could shine like stars do shine
And make their storms more bright,

If winds could speak in verses fine,
And nature’s forces be all mine,
The world would swear to my design
And everywhere be Valentine!

Then all the world I’d give to you—
The up, the down, the old, the new,
The deepest in, the farthest out,
The underneath and all about!

And everything you saw and heard
Would shine like star and sing like bird,
And when wind blew my verses true
You’d feel my pulses pulse in you.

And nature’s force not in my hand,
